4 Ways to Celebrate National Commerce Day

Photograph of a white man in a blue sweater and thick-rimmed glasses smiles and shakes the hand of a woman across the desk from him.
Did you know? National Commerce Day takes place on the first Monday of every August – in 2025, that’s August 4.

In many countries, it’s a day dedicated to celebrating the businesses and trade that nurture economies and shape communities. While National Commerce Day isn’t as well known in America, it’s still a great time to focus your marketing on your local businesses!

You probably already know what makes local businesses so great. They help support the local economy, creating jobs and supporting neighbors and families – plus, they often dedicate resources to more sustainable and ethical business practices.

Here are some ideas for how you can show your appreciation for the local businesses in your area.

1. Give a Shout Out
If your organization is active on social media, making posts about some of the local businesses around town is a great option – especially if you already serve them with your organization’s products and services. For the business, it raises awareness about their products and services. For your organization, it reinforces the notion that you truly care about the community, not just profit.

2. Throw a Party
Who doesn’t love an excuse to host a celebration event? Invite local food vendors and musicians, offer information tables to other businesses, and create a space where your community can get together, have fun and learn about each other. It’s a win-win for everyone involved!

3. Provide Coupons
Savvy shopping and great deals never go out of style. Better yet, coupons can encourage local shoppers to visit a business they hadn’t considered before!

Your organization could pull together and offer a book of coupons that is dedicated to businesses around town. Alternatively, you could contact a smaller number of businesses and work with them to feature a coupon or discount code on your organization’s other collateral, such as your quarterly newsletter or social media posts.

4. Educate!
Many casual shoppers don’t fully understand how the world of commerce really works. Show that you’re a financial leader in your community by sharing fun facts and information about business and trade! For example, you could talk about the supply chain or how supporting local business supports everyone. Feature these educational tips on social media or talk about them more in depth in your quarterly newsletters or blog posts.
